Don't Waste Horton Park Promise

Article excerpt

CONGRATULATIONS Kathy Sundstrom, your feature article, "Future below par" (Daily, March 27), says it all.

How many citizens of the Sunshine Coast knew "the site (Horton Park Golf Club) was bequeathed by the Horton family to the community for sporting and leisure activities"?

Let's hold Mr Horton's vision.

What do we need to do?

1. Establish the monetary value of this land.

2. Allocate, say, one-eighth for medium-density dwellings on the Maud Street boundary as revenue raising.

3. Open the idea to the community and welcome benefactors both large and small to join the council in acquiring the land.

4. Urge potential commercial users to consider placement of the railway station, cultural centre complex, David Jones etc at other available sites Co Plaza, Big Top or similar.

5. Begin to think of the golf course as a park for cycling, walking, training, an amphitheatre/music bowl, community garden for unit dwellers, dog park, community house, library and the like.

6. Begin to gather ideas from other cities to expand our vision.

Citizens of the Sunshine Coast, think of it as your inheritance.
