BERWICK WorkSpace, North Northumberland's only dedicated business incubator is proving to be a launch pad for successful businesses. It has supported many businesses since opening in 2008, with several recently moving on to their own, or larger premises after sustained growth.
After a string of awards and an eclectic mix of UK and international businesses. The centre, operated by TEDCO Ltd, is credited with providing 54 jobs including 23 newly created positions, good news indeed in what is often described as an economically deprived area.
Berwick WorkSpace houses 35 offices, meeting and event facilities in a building combining award-winning architecture, traditional materials and the latest technology. During its first year, it has won several prestigious awards including the United Kingdom Business Incubation (UKBI) Best New Business Incubator award and a Silver Rose Award for Regeneration. The centre also scooped a Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Award for Regeneration.
Centre manager Andrew Martin is thrilled with the progress to date.
He said: "Berwick WorkSpace has gone from strength-to-strength since the first businesses moved into the building in July 2008. Currently we have 16 businesses occupying 17 office spaces which is in line with our expected targets for occupancy and employment. We are particularly pleased that the building is attracting some very specialist companies; as they grow they will increase employment in the area and put Berwick on the map as the place for business in North Northumberland and the Borders.
"Three of our companies based at the centre have already expanded into bigger space, and one AJM Couriers has expanded to larger premises outside of the centre. This demonstrates that the support and commitment we provide makes a real difference to small companies in their quest for growth and development."
Located just off Marygate and seconds from Berwick's main thoroughfare, Berwick WorkSpace is now home to a diverse range of businesses.
Many have relocated to Berwick from elsewhere in the UK and Europe, seeing the buildings facilities on a par with the best in Europe but without the congestion of its bigger urban conurbations.
Servitir 2000 SLU which offers specialist assistance to help international hauliers recover European VAT more quickly is a case in point; the company relocated from Spain last year and now runs its operation from Northumberland. …
