Frank Jenkins, former athletic director and football coach at Jacksonville's Wolfson High School, starts Monday as athletic director at Clay County's newest high school, OakLeaf, which opens in August.

Jenkins, who taught and coached at Wolfson for 19 years, said it was a difficult decision to make the move to a brand-new school.

"This [Wolfson] is really where I thought I would retire," Jenkins said. "I was a little hesitant to apply until I got to know the principal [Ed Paulk]. The recommendations for him as a principal are very good."

He said he saw "strong support" of athletics among OakLeaf school administrators.

"Academics come first, but they are excited about both academics and athletics," he said.

Also, Jenkins, who has been Wolfson's athletic director for the past five years, said he wanted to re-establish himself as a girls basketball coach by starting from scratch.

"We're starting over. It's an unknown challenge not knowing any of the kids or any of the parents. We have no tradition and are starting at ground zero," he said.

In a statement, Paulk said Jenkins "is an excellent, committed, and caring coach who will dedicate himself completely to learning and the future of our students and athletes."

"As we strive for the goal of having No. 1 sports teams, our students will learn to believe in their dreams and be invested in the creation of their own success not only in 'Knighthood' but in life beyond high school," Paulk said, citing the school mascot, the Knights.
