THE resources boom in Gladstone is starting to squeeze people out of the housing market with prices rising at a phenomenal rate.

Due to the expected boom, the Bligh Government is running to catch up and has announced the construction of a new Urban Development Area (UDA) in Gladstone.

Premier Anna Bligh said the regionalisation plan would encourage newcomers to the region, but would also act as a blueprint for growth management in the area. "If we are accepting that it is not if we grow but how and where we are going to grow - then Queensland regional centres are going to be the home for many future Queenslanders," she said.

"We know people can be attracted to the regions because of job opportunities, affordable housing, and lifestyle advantages."

The premier said the new ULDA site would deliver diverse and affordable housing for Gladstone in the face of rapid growth and it was the first time the UDA model had been used outside Brisbane. …
