Easter to Have Some Sea Changes in Store

Article excerpt

HEY surfers, how's autumn treating you?

On average we've enjoyed some fine weather, the odd shower, but small beachies of late. The Easter long weekend may have some changes in store for us, though.

Here's what I'm seeing Co generally fine weather and a few thunderstorms, with small to medium swell up North, and fairly strong swell down South, due to a developing mid Tasman low.

Agnes Water to Coolangatta

Friday: Light southerlies and afternoon sea breezes will be the call. Early morning winds should be from the SW and not exceeding 10 knots. Afternoon should see 15 knots of sea breeze from the SE.

Surf size will average a metre (+/-) depending upon location. Direction will be east.

If you're going for an arvy, head for the points (unless you have a new quad and are hunting ramps.)

Saturday: Fresh SW winds will keep things nicely offshore most places and there will be some lift from the south on the southern points.

Size will still be a metre or so on the beaches and shape will be good early, but in the Cooly region there could be bigger waves on the points. Maybe up to 1.5 metres? Possibly. Watch the rips.

Sunday: Fresh SW winds and clean conditions most places with small, but rising beach breaks, up to a metre+, on the open beaches.

The swell is still mainly east so watch out for those rips.

The points at the southern end should be jagging-in some of the building south swell by Sunday and when the afternoon winds get stiff SE, better head for the points. That's where the quality will be.

Monday: Morning conditions are likely to be glassy, but they'll quickly turn SE-E and freshen up so the message for beach break surfers is go early.

Size on the beaches will vary, but expect an average of a metre+ with increasing currents and rips.

The points will be better with waves up to and (possibly) over 1. …
