HAVING been on the international map for around half a century, Gateshead International Stadium is looking forward to another exciting summer, with three huge fixtures set to be crammed into the Tyneside venue.

Fans of athletics may well be treated to an appearance of world 100m and 200m world record holder Usain Bolt in the Aviva British Grand Prix, on Saturday, July 10.

Then, the following weekend, July 17-18, it has just been announced that England Athletics will promote the first England Athletics Senior Championships at the banks of the Tyne venue.

Following the two major competitions, on September 3-4, it is the turn of the stars of the future to take centre stage in the UK School Games.

It's a mouthwatering prospect for everyone involved at Gateshead Council, because sprinkled in between the major competitions will be a huge number of domestic meetings.

The England Athletics Championships is not billed as an official trial but will be looked at favourably for athletes chasing precious Commonwealth Games places in Delhi in September. …
