Spirit Is Great in This Soccer Team

THE BUNDABERG Spirit under-19 soccer team lived up to its name on its Queensland State League Youth competition debut on Saturday.

The team showed plenty of fighting spirit to come from 3-1 down to earn a 3-3 draw against Logan at Brisbane's Perry Park.

Coached by Maryborough's Steve Bates, the Spirit line-up, which included the Fraser Coast's Aaron Mackie, Jacob Miles, Tim Merrick, Mitchell Broom and Brady Watt, started the game well and led 1-0 after only six minutes.

They held that lead until Logan equalised just before the half-time break Co then it was really game on.

Logan came out firing in the second half, scoring two quick goals, but the Spirit were far from finished and it was Hervey Bay's Brady Watt who completed the fight-back.

The young fullback scored the equaliser from a free-kick to earn his team a deserved share of the points.

Coach Bates said he was thrilled by the performance of his team.

"To come back from 3-1 down was a terrific effort," said Bates, the former coach of Maryborough's Doon Villa mens first division team. …
