THE CQ NRL Bid team suffered a huge blow on the weekend as another rugby league legend expressed concern about the proposed expanded 18-team NRL competition in 2013.

Australian and Queensland league icon Darren Lockyer used his newspaper column to dissuade NRL chief executive David Gallop's suggestions to spread the tournament in conjunction with the new television deal, which starts in 2013.

The Broncos captain said there was currently not enough depth of talent to support an 18-team competition.

"I'd build the entry of two teams into the later years of the television deal, which would run for at least five years," Lockyer said in his column.

"Maybe 2015, or 2014 if the league is insistent it is needed to maximise the game's income from telecasters."

Lockyer's former club and representative team-mate Shane Webcke expressed his concerns about a CQ team last year when he spoke with The Observer.

Webcke noted CQ was an NRL stronghold but was worried an extra Queensland club may dilute the depth of players from the NQ Cowboys, Brisbane Broncos and Gold Coast Titans. …
