Hula's a Hit with Healthy Kids; and Other Sports Are Fun as Well

MORE than 100 schoolchildren from Middlesbrough had a hula lot of fun at a healthy play day.

The pupils have all been involved over the winter in healthy play activities thanks to Middlesbrough's pounds 9m Healthy Towns programme.

Youngsters from four primary schools - Easterside, Marton Grove, Newham Bridge and Pennyman - have enjoyed learning playground games, hula-hooping, healthy cooking, dance and quizzes, all led by the programme's play leaders.

And last week children from three of the schools attended the play day held at Teesside University's Olympia building. They used the new skills and games they have learned as well as taking part in new activities such as the climbing wall.

Jessica Dodds, eight, from Pennyman Primary, and Shanice Croc, 11, from Marton Grove, both said their favourite part of the day had been the hula-hooping.

Jessica added: "That was my favourite bit. We also learned about making smoothies and other healthy food at school. …
