HEADS turned and ears were covered when the engine of the drag racer on display at Earles Auto Expo started up to show the crowd just how loud it is.

Grabbing attention at the event was no small feat given the colourful array of about 18 hot rods, street machines, classic cars and muscle cars on show in Hervey Bay on Saturday.

Hervey Bay Rodders secretary Jeff Neels said there was a continual procession of more than 300 people through the display held at Earles Paint Place in Pialba.

The aim of the event was to fundraise, recruit club members and to attract people to Earles to repay the business for sponsoring the club, he said.

Mr Neels said two of the cars were inside Earles and some lucky children were allowed to sit in the driver's seat of some of the machines and hit the horn.

"Hot rodding really is a family based sport," he said. …
