Payne's Back and Panthers Pay Price

Article excerpt

AFL: Six weeks ago an injury prevented Darcy Payne from trialling for a place in the under-19 Queensland Country team, but on Saturday night all that was forgotten as he kicked seven goals to ease Glenmore Bulls to victory over Panthers.

It was a physical encounter, under lights at Rockhampton Cricket Ground.

Panthers coach Darrell Dunnett said his team lost full back Rob Sander late in the game, forward Adam Kaufman and Matt Ryan with a suspected broken hand.

After being five goals behind at the main break, Panthers came home strongly but could not take the contest from the Bulls.

Dunnett was proud of the heart shown by his players to lift in the second half. There were positives.

"We were harder to the football," he said. "We had a chance to win it but skill errors let us down."

For Panthers Ben Kneen was, as always, the form player, while Payne's seven-goal haul made the youngster the Bulls pick.
