HERVEY Bay's Lars Olsen wanted to make a difference Co but on his own terms.

In 2004, Lars travelled from Hervey Bay to Nepal to volunteer at a children's orphanage.

During his time there, however, he became increasingly concerned by the issues of malnutrition, abuse and poor levels of care that plagued the orphanage Co and he decided to build his own.

The Forget-Me-Not Children's Home in Kathmandu was the result of that ambition.

In 2007 Lars won Suncorp's Young Queenslander of the Year award for his tireless efforts to fundraise for his children's home Co and he says that while he was shocked to win, he would not hesitate in encouraging others to nominate people worthy of the award.

"I didn't even know I was nominated," he said.

"I was in shock."

Three years after winning the award, Lars has just returned from a visit to his orphanage.

Even he cannot believe how much the orphanage has grown since its beginnings Co and on this visit he took his parents and sister with him for the first time. …
