WAIT TO SPEAR A BARGAIN AT THIS time of year there is always the temptation to pay a little more and go for the earliest of the early seasonal treats. Traditionally the English asparagus season starts on St George's Day (April 23) but the spears that have been forced under polytunnels are already being rushed to the market. The Jersey Royal potato season is also ahead of itself, with Royals making their way to the shops. If waiting for such goodies is proving irksome, good greengrocers have stocks... but at a price. The smart shopper will wait patiently for a week or two and get better produce and better prices. Wye Valley asparagus is [pounds sterling]4.99 to [pounds sterling]6 a bundle. Jersey Royals are about [pounds sterling]5 per kilo.
