Thank you, Billy's Boathouse. Thank you for providing a setting for me and my friends to enjoy a breezy birthday brunch celebration on Sunday. Thanks for the Benedict of perfectly poached eggs, the gobble-it-up hash brown casserole and the bold Bloody Mary mix, blossoming with sinus-clearing pepper and horseradish, a welcome side effect in this our season of pollen.

Thanks, too, for the sunny courtyard seating, the marina view and for your foresight in offering mimosas by the pitcher-full - it really saves the servers a lot of running around refilling tiny champagne glasses.

Your musical entertainment was capable and crowd-appropriate. We particularly enjoyed the female singer's Stevie Nicks affinity and used the performances of Nicks' or Fleetwood Mac's songs as an excuse to toast.

For our all-Sunday fun, Billy Cissel, owner and operator of Billy's Boathouse for 10 years, is hesitant to call what he offers weekends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. "brunch."

"When people hear 'brunch,' they expect a buffet. There's no buffet, but there's breakfast," Cissel explained.

A valid point, but I respectfully refute it. Breakfast is the peanut butter and banana bagel I eat before work. Brunch, meanwhile, is so much more. Brunch is a social affair with eggs and spiked juice drinks. Semantics aside, if you're more into the eggs part of the equation, Saturday brunch at Billy's is more of a no-nonsense meal opportunity. Sunday brunches fill up quickly, and the crowd tends to linger, making for more of a lounging, leisurely event.

Over the years, Cissel has grown his business from just a dinner place to serving lunch and dinner daily, plus breakfast on weekends. Seafood selections are Mayport's freshest, and Billy's features food theme nights all week long.
