TOURISM workers who have always dreamed of having a qualification have the chance to get that coveted piece of paper, and do it cheaply.

The Diploma of Tourism usually costs $8000, but under TAFE's Productivity Places Program, students will pay only $1600 with the government subsidising 80% of the study costs.

The program is a joint Commonwealth and Queensland government initiative to encourage people in industry to upskill and gain qualifications.

Sunshine Castle manager Birte Benecke-Uhrig has been working in the tourism industry for 20 years and has a degree in German literature.

She jumped at the opportunity to gain a Diploma of Tourism over the next few months through recognition of prior learning (RPL) Co earning credit from the skills she has gained to contribute towards her diploma.

"It is great to be acknowledged for my achievements and skills in the industry after all these years," Ms Uhrig said.

"This diploma will give me the opportunity to look at my long-term goals and potentially gain further work in this area in the future, maybe in teaching or even consulting. …
