GATESHEAD face a massive challenge to avoid relegation when they take on newly-crowned champions Stevenage Borough at the International Stadium tonight.

After a disappointing defeat by second-bottom Ebbsfleet United on Saturday, the Tynesiders need four points from their remaining two games to ensure survival.

Champions Stevenage are first up tonight followed by the visit of AFC Wimbledon on Saturday on the final day of the season.

Coach Paul Thompson admits Gateshead have it all to do if they are to avoid relegation, but insists the remaining back-to-back home games offer a glimmer of hope.

Thompson said: "Obviously our hopes took a massive blow on Saturday and we've given ourselves an uphill climb to get four points and stay in this division.

"It was a desperately disappointing result at the weekend but we know what we've got to do. Both games aren't going to be easy and we'll have to be at our best."

The Tynesiders, who currently occupy the final relegation spot, are just a point behind fourth-bottom Eastbourne Borough with a game in hand, but Thompson claims the pressure is on his side to pick up something from tonight's game. …
