TAKING over the decks is my fantasy, the reality however, is a little less party and a little more iPod playlist.

If I'm to listen to some people out there, I'm not too far off the mark. Pushing play buttons is all part and parcel of the illusive DJ phenomenon. But if it's a career I'm after, stealing TyDi's secrets may be a good starting point.

TyDi (Tyson Illingworth) has been voted number one Australian DJ two years running on the Sony ITM DJ Poll, more recently winning an International Dance Music Award for Best Breakthrough DJ.

He is, at this point, on top of the world.

Taking some time out to talk to Pulse, I ask TyDi what's keeping him there.

"Are you trying to steal my secrets?" he laughs.

"I'm just working all the time. I'm in the studio working on a new track at the moment. I'm always playing as well, I love creating music," he says.

It's fair to say TyDi was on to me from the start, but there is a lot of talent out there ready and waiting to pip him at the post.

"It's not really about that for me; it's my passion. If there is any competition it's just healthy."

There's more to TyDi's set than pushing play. Studying music technology at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, his focus is on classical theory looking to the contemporary. His debut album Look Closer, released last year, wasn't what fans were expecting.

"(People) were expecting a dance album and that's not what it is. There's a lot of layers to it ... it tells a story ... I really wanted people to listen to it and I think they have," he says.

Though TyDi spends a lot of his time overseas, he is in Australia as part of the Creamfields line-up.

New to Australia, but coming in to its 12th year internationally, Creamfields is an exciting addition to an already busy festival calendar. …
