Motivated Mentors out to Keep Kids in School

HIGH school should be a time to be enjoyed but for those who face day-to-day battles while studying, the easiest option is probably to drop out.

But dropping out of high school is rarely the answer and sometimes these battlers need a little help from more than just their friends.

Mentors devote a listening ear to students who may be lacking a strong role model at home or simply struggling with school life, and help them put issues in perspective.

Narelle Henry works as one of the mentors for United Synergies who travel to Sunshine Coast high schools to talk to students who are either thinking of leaving school or are simply having some kind of trouble.

"It's about keeping them in school," Ms Henry said.

"They're not getting the role models they need at home or they might just need help in the right direction."

Ms Henry was one of many United Synergies mentors who met yesterday to learn how to better inspire their proteges.
