DESCENDANTS of the Ebeling family will reunite this weekend to honour their relatives that served in World War Two.

Extended family members of Herman and Florence Ebeling will meet at Halfway Creek today for a family reunion.

"It's more than 150 years since my great-grandfather came to the Clarence," Peter Ebeling said.

"The cousins thought it would be a nice idea to hold a low-key tribute to our forebears."

Peter's great-grandfather John Henry Ebeling moved from Denmark to the Clarence in 1859, leaving his wife and children behind while he searched for a safer and better life.

In July 1866 he was called home to his ailing wife's side but unfortunately didn't make it back to Denmark in time.

More than 15 years later he remarried and returned to the Clarence with his three children.

The family became heavily involved in farming and after successive floods wiped out their Lawrence property, the family purchased 32 hectares of land at Halfway Creek, which later became known as the Halfway Creek coaching stop.

After his death in 1893, John's son Herman took over the family business.

Herman later married and had three children, two of whom served Australia in World War Two. Family members will travel from throughout Australia to celebrate the Ebelings achievements and dedication to the Valley.

They will visit the family's nostalgic Halfway Creek site, before returning to Grafton for a family lunch and gathering at the Regional Art Gallery.
