Tim Tebow will begin his professional football career in Jacksonville.

He just won't be wearing teal.

The former Florida quarterback will be in the orange and blue of the Denver Broncos, who took Tebow with the 25th pick of the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night. The Jaguars play host to Denver to open the 2010 season on Sept. 12 at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

"That'll be exciting, to be honest," Tebow said shortly after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced the pick at 10:09 p.m. "I'm just trying to compete, trying to get in there and get some playing time and get better. That's what I'm trying to do, get better, learn their offense, be part of their great franchise and great organization.''

The Jaguars apparently weren't too excited about Tebow. Tebow said they hadn't met with him since the NFL Combine in late February and he didn't work out for coach Jack Del Rio or general manager Gene Smith.

The Jaguars took California defensive end Tyson Alualu with the 10th pick, a selection that surprised a lot of fans. There also were a lot of fans upset that the team didn't take Tebow, who grew up in Jacksonville and played at Nease High School.

"Well, I hope there's a lot of excited fans in Denver," Tebow said.

The Broncos traded a second-, third and fourth-round pick to Baltimore to obtain the selection. Denver was the last team Tebow worked out, and he spent the entire day with coach Josh McDaniels and watched film and threw.

"It was a day full of ball," Tebow said. "Went up there and threw. Put me through their drills and I just loved it."

That was pretty evident from ESPN's broadcast. Moments before Goodell announced the pick, cameras caught Tebow on the phone while members of his family celebrated. People attending the draft party at the home of a family friend quickly began passing out white Broncos hats, and Tebow put one on while he talking on the phone. …
