AFTER seeing the funeral of Sgt Steven Campbell on television, I was moved to write in praise of the good people of Pelton who turned out in force to attend and pay their respects.

I was touched to tears to see his poor, brave family, and I wish them to know my respect and sympathy for them all, and that my thoughts and prayers are with them all. You see, in 1942, my mum, Maisie Washington became a young war widow, with myself a baby to bring up alone. Just after the war she was allocated a newly built prefab in Pelton Gardens, where she and I lived for many years. So I too am a Peltonite and lost my dad in the war. I saw young Brandon as the same and I wept for him.

To come to my second reason for writing, I was wanting to ask you if you know a way I could let the good people of Wootton Bassett know how myself, family and many friends, lots of them still in Pelton, appreciate how they have turned out time after time in great numbers to receive home our fallen soldiers and airmen, and paid their respects as the coffins passed. …
