BLYTH Spartans finished 13th, two places better than last year's finish - despite winning a game less and claiming one point fewer.

The Spartans ended the campaign with three straight defeats, the latest coming in Lincolnshire in a 2-0 loss at Gainsborough Trinity.

Goals in each half from James Hunt and former Huddersfield and Stockport striker Luke Beckett were enough to stretch Trinity's unbeaten home run to 10 games.

While Blyth disappointed on the final day, there was some consolation, with free-scoring frontman Paul Brayson claiming the Conference North Golden Boot.

Both Brayson and Fleetwood Town striker Adam Warlow failed to score on Saturday, leaving the former Magpie as top dog with 28 goals - one more than Warlow.

Brayson said: "We did not play well at all at Gainsborough. It was a typical end-of-season game and I only had two half-chances.

"I was concerned Warlow might nick two goals against Stalybridge, so it was good to see he did not get on the scoresheet. …
