University Chief Warns over Cuts as Strikes Loom

THE head of a leading university has warned against more "drastic" funding cuts to higher education.

Rick Trainor, principal of King's College London, said further budget cuts would leave students worse off.

He warned the drive to recruit more students from working-class backgrounds could be at risk if more cuts were made. His comments come as universities and colleges across London face a wave of strikes by lecturers angry over planned job cuts.

Unions fear 205 jobs will go at King's. Ministers have slashed almost [pounds sterling]1 billion from university budgets for the next three years.

Professor Trainor defended the planned "efficiencies" at King's, which threaten to hit staff in 13 departments, including engineering, psychiatry, arts and humanities, and health sciences.

But he said the cuts must go no further, with students "rightly" demanding more from their courses as they pay higher fees. …
