Kachi Has Made the Shortlist; Lecturer Tipped in Book Awards

A LECTURER from Teesside is taking the literary world by storm after being nominated for a prestigious award.

Kachi Ozumba's first novel The Shadow of a Smile has been shortlisted for the 2010 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book in the Africa region.

Kachi, who is originally from Nigeria, now works at Teesside University as a part-time Creative Writing lecturer.

The Shadow of a Smile was first published last September and was included in a list of books for 2009 compiled by two national newspapers.

A review of Kachi's novel in The Independent spoke of how his "gift for capturing detail is astonishing".

Kachi said: "I studied philosophy in Nigeria, but I always wanted to write and teach writing.

When I came over to Leeds to complete my MA I started to get a bit of recognition for my work, which gave me a lot of encouragement.

"I can draw from my experiences in getting my work published by talking to students about what I did right, or wrong. …
