Houston - We Have a Problem

Article excerpt

THERE'S been a debate raging throughout the region this week, and it has nothing to do with the Election.

Rather a certain diva superstar by the name of Whitney Houston, who played the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle last week.

Our Entertainment Editor Gordon Barr reviewed the gig and it created something of a talking point among those also at the Arena - to say the least.

Some of you were incensed at his take on the show - others agreed with him.

It had been well-publicised how Whitney's tour had been dogged with problems. Everyone knew her years of battling against addictions had played havoc with her vocal chords and the Whitney voice of old was not the Whitney voice of 2010.

Gordon maintains his review reflected that, and perhaps the headline (which he did not write) "Superstar Whitney can still deliver" was a tad misleading. Excerpts from the review included: The big question on everyone's lips was would she - could she - deliver the goods? There was a tangible air of expectancy in the build-up to last night's show - but few could have come away feeling they had not been entertained.

I would prefer to see an "imperfect" Whitney sing live to a "perfect" Britney mime any day and by the end of her 90-minute set the 46-year-old proved she still had that star quality about her.

The gig was not without its faults.

When she did deliver the goods, she delivered them with class.

Yes she did sound breathy at times.

Tyneside got a taste of a true superstar last night.

Here now are some of your responses.

FOR: I was also there and had great seats and made it a point to look around and take note of what was going on.

There is always someone trying to change the facts.

I'm sure Gordon can attest to people standing up, cheering and having a good time.

I have no axe to grind and I'm not even an uber fan.

Carolyn (via Chroniclelive) Whitney obviously loves her fans and she was getting a great reception where I was! If people walked out, I didn't notice.

There were absolutely LOADS of people still there when the concert finished - I saw it with my own two eyes! …
