No Risk from Plant Fire; Blaze Tackled at Chemical Site

A BLAZE at the Wilton Chemical site was never any risk to workers or those living nearby, bosses said today.

A billowing plume of thick black smoke poured from the centre of the site yesterday afternoon, and electronic warning signs at the gate said: "Please leave site immediately."

The fire at the Greenstar WES plastics recycling facility began just after 3pm.

On-site firefighters and fire engines from Cleveland Fire Brigade attended the scene.

When the Evening Gazette arrived at the site, alarms were sounding an alert, and a security guard told us to leave the site as a "toxic" incident was being dealt with.

Nobody was hurt during the fire, and a spokesman at the site said the blaze was dealt with "quickly and professionally".

The managing director of Greenstar, James Donaldson, said: "As a precaution due to the presence of smoke from the incident the site emergency alarm was sounded although there was no danger at any stage to anyone on or off site. …
