AFTER more than three decades in industry, John Knaggs faced going back to the classroom to find a new future after redundancy. KAREN McLAUCHLAN found out how the 58-year-old is now on track to completing a degree.

JOHN Knaggs never needed a formal management qualification - with 33 years in management and responsibility for more than 70 staff as an operations manager in Middlesbrough - his career was established.

All that changed when he was earmarked for redundancy. "At 58 I was thrust into a situation I had never experienced before at which point OneDoor provided invaluable support and guidance," said John. "All my management experience had been acquired whilst actually doing the job. I have no formal management qualifications and it had been 17 years since I'd put a CV together."

John's employer put him in touch with Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) officer Mark Thorpe at OneDoor - an education and higher-level learning gateway targeting both individuals and businesses.

OneDoor was launched by Teesside University in partnership with five Tees Valley colleges including Redcar and Cleveland College and offers careers and education advice, guidance and financial support specific to individual needs.

Mark said: "My job is to discuss the options available to professional and skilled people who, due to the economic conditions find themselves working under threat of, or actually facing redundancy.

"In John's case he has an exceptionally strong background in managing large teams of people but was lacking any formal management qualifications which meant the Redcar and Cleveland College Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) fast track degree course was an ideal option for him."

John said: "Mark's advice was spot on and within minutes of arriving home following the meeting I had an email from him confirming I had a place at the college.

"I enrolled on a one year degree course to obtain a formal management qualification to support my practical experience. …
