AHMED NOMINATION COUNCIL LEANINGS; More on Council Back Ahmed Than Oppose Him

Article excerpt

Byline: TIA MITCHELL

What started as a routine nomination to a little-known city advisory board is now one of the most closely watched votes the Jacksonville City Council will make.

The Jacksonville City Council will decide Tuesday whether to confirm University of North Florida finance professor and Fulbright Scholar Parvez Ahmed to the city's Human Rights Commission.

Two weeks ago, the council voted to send the matter back to the Rules Committee after last-minute opposition research on Ahmed surfaced, claiming he had ties to extremists. The Rules Committee voted last week for the second time to recommend Ahmed for approval.

The Times-Union asked all 19 council members how they were leaning on the Ahmed nomination. Based on the polling, there are many more council members ready to support Ahmed's nomination than are poised to vote against his nomination.
