Bishop Kenny received a strong pitching performance from Chase Wissman and some timely two-out hitting to defeat visiting Palatka 5-2 in a Region 1-4A quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Wissman (7-2) lasted six innings, allowing four hits and three walks and striking out eight.

"He was outstanding," Bishop Kenny coach Tommy Edwards said. "He was all around the plate and throwing strikes."

BK trailed 2-1 in the fourth inning but took the lead on a two-out burst. Mike Simmons and Colin Monagle each had RBI singles. Ben Gamel then drove home another run with a double.

"Those are the things you have to do in the playoffs," Edwards said. "You have to get those two-out hits."

Monagle finished the game 2 for 2 with a solo home run in the first. He also walked and had a sacrifice bunt.

"He's a battler," Edwards said. "He's really igniting us, and that's contagious in the dugout."

Wissman's strong effort allowed BK to keep its staff fresh heading into Friday's regional semifinal. The Crusaders (17-8) will host Ponte Vedra, which defeated Paxon 7-1.

Starting pitcher Blake Bramblett stifled the Paxon offense by pitching 6 2/3 solid innings, and Kevin Young came up with a pair of key hits with two outs and the bases loaded, driving in four.

Region 1-6A: Will Campbell turned in a solid effort on the mound, pitching six innings to lead Sandalwood past New Smyrna Beach 8-3 in a Region 1-6A quarterfinal.

Campbell struck out three and earned his 11th win of the season. Matt Miller led the Saints at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two RBI and a stolen base. Sandalwood took advantage of several mistakes by New Smyrna Beach, which committed five errors and managed six hits.

Sandalwood (21-6) will host District 1-6A rival Mandarin in Friday's regional semifinal.

Region 1-5A: Columbia's Blake King won his 11th game of the season as the Tigers beat Tallahassee Lincoln 5-3. …
