ROZ SOUTHEY (pictured), a 58-year-old part-time lecturer at Newcastle University in the International Centre for Music Studies, is the author of Sword And Song, the fourth book in the Charles Patterson historical mystery series. * What was the first book you read? I have to admit the first one I remember was Shadow The Sheepdog by Enid Blyton. I loved this book as I lived in the Lake District among farmers and their animals, collie dogs were very familiar to me. I still have the book, although I never open it -it would only spoil the memories. * What are you currently reading? Alastair Reynold's huge science fiction tome Terminal World. I love the massive sweep of his imagination, which always astounds me. And I have a true crime book -James Ellroy's Black Dahlia lined up on the shelf for when I finish Reynolds' book.

* What book have you started but couldn't finish and why? War And Peace. My sister swears it's a fabulous book but I have tried to read it at least three times and got horribly bored by it. …
