Call for Action to Help Small Firms to Grow

SMALL firms in the North East want action on the economy as the top priority of the new government, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

Reducing the budget deficit and improving access to credit, plus action to simplify the tax system and improve the opportunities for small enterprises who want to sell to the public sector are the FSB's key demands for the coalition.

In a snap poll of North East members following the election, 70% said they wanted the deficit reduced - with more than half (52%) calling for this to be done through a reduction in public sector spending. More than four in 10 - 44% - said the banking system should be reformed.

FSB North East policy manager Simon Hanson said: "There is no doubt that the North East economy faces some challenges over the next few years as the spending slowdown kicks in. Small businesses in the North East want to see action taken by the new Government ."

He said small firms opposed a rise in National Insurance contributions, which the FSB estimates will cost 57,000 jobs and increase costs. …
