Shipley Staff Make a Winning Choice

STAFF at the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead are celebrating their success in a Supermarket Sweep-style art fair competition.

And it's a success that all visitors to the Shipley will benefit from. The prize is a new ceramic work called Conservation, valued at pounds 10,800, which will go on public display.

Art Fund Collect is run by the Art Fund charity and the Crafts Council on the eve of Collect, the Crafts Council's international fair at the Saatchi Gallery in London.

Ahead of private buyers, curators from shortlisted galleries are given one hour to go around the fair and pick an object from the many on show. They then go before a panel of judges who decide which of the curators should win a share of pounds 75,000, enabling them to purchase their chosen object.

Amy Barker and Sim Panesar, respectively curator and keeper of art at the Shipley, took part in Art Fund Collect on Thursday and picked Conservation, a two-part work by London-based ceramicist Nicolas Rena. …
