Cameron's City Ban Is a Waste; CITY COMMENT

JOHNNY Cameron, the man who ran the investment banking arm of Royal Bank of Scotland when, with Sir Fred Goodwin at the helm, it set out to conquer the world has reportedly agreed to accept a ban from the Financial Services Authority which stops him from taking on another senior roll in the City.

Though Cameron was never high profile nor courted publicity in the way heads of rival investment banks tended to do in those now far-off good times, he was nevertheless a hugely important and powerful figure in London banking circles. This makes him probably the most senior banker ever to have been banned in this way.

Similarly, the investment banking arm of RBS -- though it kept this deliberately low profile -- was, for many years, a highly successful and profitable part of the business whose rapid growth was used to spread lustre over the otherwise pedestrian performance of other parts of the bank. …
