IT'S a good thing Coffs Harbour Comets have the bye this weekend because it gives a few people some time to have an attitude adjustment.

The performance that this club has put in over the first three weeks of the season has been a long way below par.

Some players who are allegedly receiving some pretty handy cash for taking the field each week aren't delivering value for money.

The trouble is that a lot of players don't realise when they're playing bad that they are affecting more than just the people that they take the field with on the weekend.

I've always said that every 20- or 21-year-old player should spend a year or two on a club committee so they realise just how hard it is to come up with the money to pay players.

If a highly paid player has a bad game then he must realise that the money he's accepting each week probably comes from the hard work of the person who gets to the ground early and hardly sees any football because they've spent almost their entire day cooking steak sandwiches, selling drinks at the bar, feeding the throng at the canteen or collecting the admission money at the gate.

It's not just an appreciation of who you're playing for that can help the Comets turn their season around after three losses.

Maybe some super glue on the hands would be a great first step.

Comets coach Warren Gilkinson knows football is a very simple game and he has a game plan that complies with this theory.

Cart the ball up, don't do anything silly while the ball is in your own half and only when you're in good field position should you start throwing the ball around.

It's an easy plan but it doesn't work without ball control.

I've seen Coffs Harbour play two of their three games. In those two matches they've had a total of 60 sets. They've completed only 26 of them. …
