Nurses Have a Special Day; Dedication Continues as Payroll Problems Bite

BUNDABERG nurses will try to get their minds off ongoing problems with Queensland Health's payroll system as they celebrate their own special day today.

May 12 is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, recognised as one of the founders of modern nursing, and is celebrated around the globe as International Nurses' Day.

Queensland Nurses' Union Bundaberg regional organiser Vicki Smyth said it was ironic nurses who were struggling to get their proper wages paid to them would celebrate their special day during National Volunteers Week.

"There are certainly lots of stories out there about nurses who are not being paid at various times," she said.

"But we can only deal with problems as they arise."

Ms Smyth said she did not expect that problems with the payroll system would be stabilised until mid-June.

"There are still quite a lot of issues to work through," she said.

Ms Smyth said the problems with the payroll system were taking up a huge amount of the time of managers, and nurse managers were not getting the time to do their proper jobs. …
