EVERY racehorse owner's dream became a wonderful reality for a group of Ipswich mates after their horse hit the big time in Brisbane.

Albert the Fat, so-named because his father is called Magic Albert a and Fat Albert was taken a won the BTC Cup at Doomben on Saturday.

The BTC Cup is a Group 1 race, a classification given to the best class of races. It also has prize money of $256,000 for the winner.

When Albert the Fat fought out the finish with Sydney filly Melito and won by just a nose, pandemonium broke out in the winners' stall.

Albert the Fat has 10 owners, most from Ipswich, and all of them went crazy, not the least because the horse started at odds of 20 to 1.

Jason White of Big White Furniture Store fame is one of the owners, and yesterday he was still coming to terms with the win.

His father John White is also a part-owner, while other Ipswich shareholders include Jamie and Mark Stumer, Paul and Dan Schimke and John Moynihan.

Six of the owners played rugby league in Ipswich for West End, and John White coached and played for West End, so the owners' silks are West End's maroon and blue with the bulldog logo.

"We were hoping for a good showing, a top-five finish sort of thing," Mr White said.

"It's the first time he's been on the rails; he's always on the outside. When they got to the 250m he was still on the fence and the run just opened up for him. We went through and Melito went with us and somehow he held her out.

"Where we were standing it looked like we'd won by half a head to a head, but when they put the slow motion replay up we said: a[approximately]I hope we haven't gone off too early' because we were doing handstands by then. When number four went up, we went off again.

"I backed him fixed price at 50 to 1 and twice more before that and had something on him on Saturday just to have money at the track. …
