Saying 'No' Just Isn't in My Vocabulary

FOR many years my children have been listening to my complaints about being too busy to do some of the things I really want to do just for myself, with the challenge: "You just have to say NO!"

But gosh, when people make you feel so wonderful by saying, "You are so good at doing this/that, and there is no one else that can do it as well," of course they know that my inflated ego will respond by agreeing to do whatever it is they want.

So I trotted along to a meeting convened by a friend to re-form the defunct netball competition in Kyogle. My contribution, I believed, was solely to report the outcome through the media.

The meeting was chaired by a former school principal armed with an agenda, strict time parameters, pens and paper and a very authoritative way about him.

When he delegated me to being part of a discussion group I objected that I was only there as a reporter, but was promptly admonished and told to do my part. …
