VIOLET May Mann was born on September 30, 1930, to Brisbane couple Clara and Tom Lahey, she was the youngest of eight children.

She is predeceased by all but one brother Bill.

Violet - known as Vi to all - grew up in the years when her mother washed the clothes in kerosene tins, the boys played backyard cricket and the kids walked miles to the convent school in worn out shoes.

It was a hard time for the family and at age 14 Vi left school and got a dress-making job.

She would give most of her pay to her mother to enable the family to manage.

Vi met Ray Mann when she was 15 and they married in 1949.

They lived in Brisbane for a few years when Maureen, Audrey and Carol were born.

They saved as much as possible and when Carol was two weeks old they moved to Urbenville in a motorbike and side car. …
