Doris Has Advice for Our Retirees

DORIS JONES has given 20 years of her life volunteering at the Mackay Mater Hospital and she has enjoyed every minute of it.

With cups of tea and a friendly face to have a chat with, it is volunteers such as Doris who make patients feel right at home after they have had surgery at the Mackay Day Surgery.

"Nearly 20 years ago there was a story in the paper asking for volunteers at the old Mater Hospital a this was an answered prayer," Doris said.

"I had just retired from my librarian aide's job at Homebush State School and was looking for something to do and I have been going to the Mater once a week ever since.

"I have enjoyed every minute at the Mater but unfortunately I have had to give it up due to a bad back; otherwise I would certainly still be there.

"When the new hospital moved from the city I went into the day surgery area. My job was to make cups of tea or coffee for patients. …
