Thank God for the Salvos and Their Red Shield Appeal Workers

BEING part of the country's most well known and respected fundraisers is a pleasure for a long-standing Gladstone volunteer.

Dulcie Benn became involved with the Red Shield Appeal in early 1995.

"I was invited to help with the door knock and then joined the committee," Ms Benn said.

As a committee member, Ms Benn is responsible for orchestrating her team to carry out the door knock, which occurs over the last weekend in May.

"The Salvation Army helps the government tremendously," she said.

"That's probably why we get such excellent support from the public, because they know we're helping."

Ms Benn, an avid churchgoer and volunteer in other local groups, receives a strong sense of community spirit from being involved in the annual fundraising event.

"While I'm not comfortable asking people for money, I don't apologise because it's for a good cause," she said. "They'll run and get their donation, even if it's only two dollars and we're very grateful. …
