TWO wins from three games for the Country Kookaburras Under-16s was an excellent return for a team together for only a day before hitting the Brisbane fields.

AFL Capricornia regional manager Scott Smithwick said to knock off the Southern Bushrangers on Saturday after an honourable four-goal loss to the Gold Coast Stingrays was a huge effort.

"We dominated the game and we normally don't beat them," he said.

"We kept up the pressure for the whole game."

Smithwick said Gladstone representative Jamie Cunninghame, from BITS Saints, performed very well at the championships.

"He was played at halfback and rotated through the midfield," Smithwick said.

"He was very competitive at this level.

"If he can grow a couple of inches over the next few years, that'll help him."

Centre-halfback James Royes was a standout on the day, holding the Bushrangers' gun centre-halfback to one kick, Smithwick said.

Despite losing to the Stingrays on the first day, it was still aa fantastic efforta, Smithwick said, given the side had been training together for six weeks. …
