RUGBY LEAGUE: There is something ironic about the fact the CQ Comets have put together their best playing roster and yet find it difficult to escape from a lengthy losing streak.

It has to be frustrating for coach Wayne Barnett and his crew as they know too well what this squad of players is capable of producing and yet the team is in serious danger of having its season end almost before it has started.

There were few warning signs when the season opened as the Comets beat the Mackay Cutters and then travelled to the Sunshine Coast to record a fantastic 32-18 win.

At that point the odds were on the side of the Comets to continue their good form and march forward to the finals.

Then came the televised debacle against Easts where the Comets switched off for the first hour of the match and were suitably punished.

Now it is the Comets' second televised match of the season and a great opportunity to turn the season around. It won't be easy as they face a Wynnum Manly team that sits third on the Intrust Super Cup table with just one loss to its name.

While the Comets' season is under threat, so are the positions of some of the players who have been regular fixtures over the past couple of seasons. …
