Salary Cap Increase Not Enough to Keep Elite

REPORTS of a proposed $50,000 increase to NRL salary caps have bemused players and officials, with Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith saying it would do little to stop the likes of Israel Folau leaving the game.

Details emerged yesterday that the NRL was looking at funding a $3 million rescue package to help keep the game's biggest stars from being poached by rival codes.

The plan is said to be one of a range of ideas being considered by the NRL in the wake of this week's meeting of the league's chief executives. A final decision will be made once chief executives have submitted their reports on May 21.

While the proposed $3 million offer might sound impressive, it would lead to a salary cap increase of only $50,000 on the current level of $4.1 million.

Representative payments, which currently stand at $6000 for a Test and $12,500 for an Origin appearance, are also likely to be increased from current levels. …
