It Never Rains but It Pours! INSIDE TRACK

FOLLOWING the excitement of Ladies Night here at Newcastle Racecourse last Friday, I packed my trunk and immediately headed for the airport where, despite the inclement volcano, I was able to catch a flight to Kenya. Regular readers of my column will hopefully be pleased to know I have not done a runner.

I have in fact been assisting N'gong Racecourse in Nairobi on a troubleshooting expedition at their track. Racing is very popular and has a long tradition in the country, the Jockey Club of Kenya having been founded in 1904.

However, much like our National Hunt season last year, racing in Kenya has had its fair share of inclement weather to deal with in recent times.

Last week the N'gong course saw six inches of rain fall in just one night - and I thought we had a hard time with the weather over here!

Sadly this deluge meant the only meeting due to be held during my stay was cancelled.

Nevertheless this unfortunate development did give me more time to get to grips with the track and provide what I hope will be some useful recommendations. …
