ENGLAND yesterday suffered the first withdrawal from their summer tour of Australia and New Zealand when Dylan Hartley pulled out with a knee injury.

Hartley (pictured right) sus-tained cartilage damage to his left leg during Northampton's 21-19 defeat by Saracens in their Guinness Premiership semi-final on Sunday. A scan revealed the extent of an injury which will be treated with an arthroscopy. George Chuter of Leicester has been called up to replace the combative 24-year-old hooker, who was embarking on his first major England tour.

Hartley, known for an abrasive style which saw him banned for six months in 2007 for eye-gouging, has grown in stature throughout a strong campaign at Franklin's Gardens. Named captain at the start of the season, the New Zealandborn front row led Saints to LV= Cup glory, a spot in the Heineken Cup quarterfinals - making them the only English club to be involved in the knockout stages - and second place in the Premiership. …
