AIMEE WILLMOTT -Winner WHAT an incredible splash Teesside swimmer Aimee has made in the pool over the past year.

The 17-year-old from Ormesby has rounded off a remarkable 12 months by qualifying to represent England in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She booked her place on the flight to Delhi by performing outstandingly well at the British Gas Swimming Championships in Sheffield. She earned silver medals in the 200m and 400m medley finals to qualify.

Aimee won the 400m medley and finished hot on the heels of double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington in the 800m freestyle and was second in the 200m in March's Duel In The Pool in Swansea.

Aimee also grabbed silver in the 400m and 200m individual medley at European Junior Championships, in Prague last summer.

As new Gazette Sportsperson of the Year, Aimee said: "I was really happy to be nominated and to be shortlisted was just as good, but to win the award is fantastic.

"It has all happened really suddenly for me this season. Last year I was swimming at junior level and from one competition I've moved straight into the seniors.

"It's been a big jump for me but my success has all been down to hard work and commitment. I can't wait for the Commonwealth Games now.

"There are so many people who've helped me that I'd like to thank."

RICKY STEVENSON CLEVELAND middle-distance runner Ricky has two significant targets in his sights.

The 21-year-old former Bydales School pupil is hot in pursuit of GB 1500m No 1 Andrew Baddeley and targeting London 2012.

A sensational six months has seen the Steve Shaw coached athlete rise to within striking distance of the nation's finest and while the modest Teesside University sports science degree student is refusing to get carried away, he is determined to fulfil his potential in athletics. …
