DURHAM were today waiting to see how long promising teenage batsman Ben Stokes would be out of action.

He top scored with just 27 on a dismal day for Durham at the Riverside as Kent raced into a commanding lead - then suffered a badly sprained ankle in the field.

In his previous two Championship matches Stokes, 19 next month, had scored centuries, and while Durham should not be relying on one so young, he is quickly becoming a key man, especially as the side is missing several other players through injury.

And it showed as they were bowled out for 121 after Phil Mustard elected to bat. Amjad Khan took five wickets and Makhaya Ntini four.

And despite the efforts of former Middlesbrough bowler Liam Plunkett, Kent quickly took charge when they batted, reaching 305-8 by the close.

Steve Harmison's first four overs went for 41 runs, before Plunkett removed openers Robert Key and Joe Denley.

But by then Kent were already within sight of Durham's score and they cruised past it with just those two wickets down. …
