Green Gym Fixes It for Lonely City Residents

A NEW green gym has been launched in Newcastle.

Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle has started the sessions, at the newlyrevamped Wretham Place park in Shieldfield.

The organisation is inviting people who live nearby to take part in the green gym and help keep the play area looking great.

Residents worked for eight-and-a-half years to secure improvements to Wretham Place.

It had fallen into disrepair and had become an eyesore.

Eventually the Shieldfield Community Forum, helped by Groundwork, managed to secure pounds 123,000 to revamp the park, which opened last autumn.

The green gym is designed for all members of the community, including adults who lead inactive lifestyles, who experience isolation and mental or physical health problems. The aim is to help them learn new skills, meet people, get fitter and have a positive effect on the environment.

The project has been partfunded by Marks and Spencer Green Living and the National Lottery Community Spaces fund, to carry on improving the park and make sure it can be enjoyed by the community. …
