GENE METZIG: 1941-2010; He Spent Career in Newspaper Business "Gene Always Took the High Road," Said T-U's GM Bobby Martin

Gene Metzig, who spent the last 30 years of his career in the sales and distribution sides of the newspaper industry, died Thursday at the Hadlow Center for Caring of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. He was 68 and had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Hibernia Baptist Church, 7100 U.S. 17, Fleming Island. Burial will be private.

Mr. Metzig, a Clay County resident for the past 20 years, retired as director of distribution and mail from The Florida Times-Union in 2000. He had directed a team of about 100 employees.

He joined the Jacksonville paper in 1991 as an advertising salesperson and soon became involved with the T-U's former Bullseye Marketing Division - which was the non-subscriber direct-mail department - becoming its general manager.

"Gene was a kind-hearted man whom you immediately liked when you first met him," said Bobby Martin, general manager of the Times-Union. "His love of God and his family combined with respect for his fellow man made him a unique individual."

Martin noted that Mr. Metzig started Bullseye and helped grow it into a successful venture.

"I remember him the most for his fairness and desire to treat his employees the way he would like to be treated," Martin said. "Gene always took the high road in decisions at work or in his personal life."
