MOLLY-JOWATSONwent out with all guns blazing to win the National Junior Female flyweight title in Portsmouth.

The 16-year-old Wellington ABC battler shot down home favourite Georgie Scotney 13-11 to crown an unforgettable debut with silverware at the Mountbatten Centre.

Short and strong Scotney had the edge in experience on the sweltering South Coast after winning her one previous bout.

But Watson, from Grove Hill in Middlesbrough, used her height advantage and enjoyed the upper hand in will power and workrate in a hammer and tongs encounter.

"She did herself proud against a strong lass and dug in," saidWellington ABC head coach John Dryden.

"It was back and forth all the way and they were both shattered.

"Molly kept going and pulled it out of the bag and England coachMick Gannon said he was impressed with her, which was a nice compliment.

"The event was a good advert for women's boxing -all of the competitorswere gritty and there was a great atmosphere.

"We'd had an horrendous journey down on the train, standing all the way to Peterborough in the heat, so it made the journey home a lot sweeter."

Watson even got a pat on the back from Scottish songstress Janey Cutler, the 81-year-old Britan's Got Talent finalist who the Wellington party bumped into at King's Cross station in London on their return journey.

Watson is the second Wellington ABC female boxer to win national honours, following Nicky Owens' senior women's title success at featherweight in 2003.

REDCAR ABC won eight of the 13 bouts from 14 they were involved in on their third and final club show of the season at Coatham Bowl.

Lee McQuillan and Opreet Ghag were among the Redcar winners.
